About Cathy

A public education advocate

Cathy Fuentes-Rohwer is finishing her first term as a school board member of the Monroe County School Corporation. Cathy and her husband, Luis, have 4 children—three proud graduates of MCCSC, and one who is a sophomore at Bloomington High School South. Cathy has had an active role over the years in her children’s schools. She was a regular volunteer in the school library and spent countless hours on the two campaigns for the MCCSC referenda.

Cathy holds a B.A. from the University of Michigan in psychology as well as a master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University in the Social Foundations of Education. Advocating for children, teachers, and public education, Cathy was one of the cofounders of the Indiana Coalition for Public Education of Monroe County and now serves as the statewide ICPE president. ICPE works to engage communities on the issues surrounding public education, empowering them to advocate for policies that support and strengthen public schools.

Leadership to protect and support all students

Helped advocate for new policy to prevent lunch shaming.

Encouraged a board decision to take down the “A” banner as it validated Indiana’s rigged system of grading schools; wrote the letter explaining why it was voted on and passed.

Helped craft a resolution supporting DACA students and another for undocumented and immigrant families.

Continues to affirm our schools’ inclusive nature. Our public schools are for all.

Brought in Building Thriving Compassionate Communities (BTCC) to give training on implicit bias for the board in April 2019.

Under her leadership, the board passed a resolution for Public Schools Week in February 2020.

Contributed to a statement about racism this summer from MCCSC and the board.
